If you suspect that your child has a problem, the first thing you should do is to consult your pediatrician. He or she is the most qualified person to medically assess your child.

Applying to Little Village
Families must complete an application and evaluation process for their child to be considered for admission to Little Village School. Parents whose children are students at Little Village have found the entire application process to be supportive and encouraging.

Students who live in Nassau and Suffolk Counties of New York State are eligible for admission to Little Village. (If you live outside of Long Island, click here.)

The following are application procedures for the three Little Village School Programs.

Infants (birth - 2 years, 6 months) are referred by the County Department of Health, at which time their parents are contacted by a member of the infant team to arrange an interview to explain the types of home or center-based programming available.

Pre-School Students (2 years, 6 months through 4 years, 6 months) are referred by a Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) within the district in which they reside. Click here for more information about CPSE. When they are referred, they are contacted by a member of the Little Village Social Work Department. These students must be diagnosed as a Preschool Child with a Disability or as a Preschool Child with Autism.

Elementary School Students (ages 5 - 11) must be referred by the Committee on Special Education (CSE) within the district in which they reside.

Children with a severe chronic medical condition (medically fragile) are accepted on an individual basis according to their ability to benefit from placement in a special education class. A nurse may be required to accompany some children depending on their medical needs.

Little Village School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin.

There are several steps in the admission process:

1. When a CPSE or CSE (see above) referral, together with the evaluation packet is received, the parent(s) are invited to visit Little Village if they have not done so previously. Programs and services are explained at this meeting.
2. An intake/screening appointment is made for the parent(s) to bring their child to Little Village School to determine if there is an appropriate placement available and if tall IEP requirements can be met.
3. Parent(s) and the CPSE or CSE are informed as soon as possible as to the availability of an approproate placement at Little Village School.

The Committee on Preschool Special Education
Parents of children under the age of five who might require special education and/or therapeutic services should contact the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) in their local school district. They will be supplied with a list of approved evaluation sites, and referred to the one of their choice. After the evaluation is completed, the CPSE meets to discuss the evaluation results and to determine the child's eligibility for services. If the child is deemed eligible for services, a detailed Individual Education Plan (IEP) is generated which includes instructional and/or therapeutic objectives. Once the child turns five the CSE (Committee on Special Education) replaces the CPSE. Little Village is an approved evaluation site.
